I promise you, if you didn’t play the beta and you haven’t conducted any research, you will start off with a low k/d ratio. You have to completely change your mindset from Gears of War 2. Gears of War 3 is not a game where you switch to your Gnasher from the spawn and never look back.
In the beta, the majority of players used the two new starter weapons; the Retro Lancer and the Sawed Off Shotgun. As with the beta, the majority of players new to the game will use these two new starting weapons. The Retro Lancer is a rifle that is very, very strong at close range. It is however, inaccurate at medium to long range. The Sawed Off Shotgun is a guaranteed kill at very close range, you have to be within two steps of your target for it to do its job. The downside to the Sawed Off is the long reload time, if you miss your shot you are a sitting duck. Both of these weapons counter the Gnasher in one way or another. If you are a beast with the Gnasher then you don’t have much to worry about, but if you aren’t you have to pick your battles wisely.
There was a lot of complaining about how overpowered both these weapons were in the beta, the only thing I considered slightly overpowered was the hip firing accuracy of the Retro Lancer. Every member of my team ran with the setup of Gnasher and Lancer/Hammerburst. We never ran into a team of Retro Lancers and Sawed Offs that we couldn’t beat, proving that these weapons weren’t overpowered, they just required a different method of strategic play. It is all in how you approach your battles. If the other team is using Retro Lancers and Sawed Offs, then keep your distance with a Hammerburst or Lancer and mow them down.
My favorite weapon, the Hammerburst is now once again a viable. It took me a few games to get used to the new iron sights when you zoom in, but I love this weapon more than the Hammerburst from Gears of War 2 before it was nerfed. If you are good with this weapon, you and your team will succeed in Gears of War 3.
Just remember before you load up your first multi-player game, this isn’t Gears of War 2. This game involves more strategic thinking. Pay attention to what weapon your enemy is holding, and learn to counter it.
